UK emissions targets at risk from increased coal use

Emissions from power stations in the UK shot up to 178 million tonnes of CO2 in 2006, up 6% in 2005, after a sector-wide return to coal use driven by high gas prices and increasing electricity demand, the Independent reported on Wednesday, citing a new report.

Soaring greenhouse gas emissions from power stations are seriously threatening Britain’s new climate-change targets, launched only two weeks ago, said the report, which was commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
Emissions in the power sector have rocketed by nearly 30% since 1999, raising "serious concerns", the report says, about whether the government can meet its proposed target under the recently launched Climate Change Bill to cut emissions by 26%, to 32% by 2020.
