Ecuador to help tribes sue Chevron

Rafael Correa, Ecuador's president, has said that his government will help Amazon jungle dwellers fight a US$6 billion pollution lawsuit against Chevron Corporation.

The government will help the tribesmen to gather evidence to support their contention that the US oil firm has polluted their communities, Al Jazeera reported Correa as saying in a statement on Tuesday.

The nearly 30,000 jungle residents accuse Chevron’s subsidiary, Texaco, of dumping 18 billion gallons of oil-laden water into their region of the Amazon between 1972 and 1992.

“We will not allow any more preying on our environment and our people," Correa said in the statement.
