China “committed” to global warming fight, says official

China is making a serious effort to protect the global environment, even though it is exempt from legally-binding greenhouse gas reductions, said the country’s top weather official on Wednesday.

“China is on the same boat with the rest of the world and we’re facing the same problems of rising temperature and all its consequences,” China Daily reported Qin Dahe, director of China Meteorological Administration, as saying.

“The Chinese government will not just consider its own interests and neglect other countries,” said Qin.
As a responsible member of the international community, China has already made efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change, he noted, citing China’s commitment to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20% from 2006 to 2010.
