Wildlife group urges sustainable Chinese new year

Chinese celebrating with traditional lunar new year banquets should avoid eating endangered species, Reuters cited a wildlife group as saying on Friday.

Diner should only buy sharks’ fin, sea cucumber and abalone from sustainable sources, as stocks are dropping, and should not buy facai, a rare black moss, Hong Kong-based wildlife monitoring network TRAFFIC said in an emailed statement.

"It’s about being aware of what you consume, and the impact it can have on species and the environment," the statement quoted Timothy Lam of TRAFFIC as saying.
