Conservationists urge action on tuna stocks

Environmentalists have called for a radical overhaul of global fishing practices to prevent a worldwide collapse in tuna stocks.

The call came in Kobe, Japan, as international conservation organisations opened their first joint meeting on tuna.
At the five-day conference, which began on Monday, the groups are looking for ways in which information can be shared among regions, in the interest of monitoring tuna numbers and controlling illegal fishing vessels.
Environmentalists asked conference participants to come up with substantive measures to protect the fish stocks.
WWF officials called the gathering an important first step, but said regulators needed to set quotas based on scientific data as well as to combat illegal fishing.
