India completes controversial dam

Construction of a highly ambitious and controversial Indian dam was completed on December 31, nearly two decades after the country launched the project which environmental groups say will destroy the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

Authorities hailed the completion of the US$7.7 billion Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat state as an answer to the water, irrigation and power needs of millions of people in the vast, parched regions of western India.
The Sardar Sarovar is the centerpiece of the multibillion-dollar Narmada Valley development project that taps the Narmada, India’s fifth-largest river, through a series of dams, reservoirs and canals.
