Praise for China’s climate strategy

Chinese efforts to fight climate change are exemplary, Xinhua news agency reported United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon as saying. Ban met with the Chinese delegation to the UN during climate talks currently being held in Poznan, Poland.

China has been taking positive action to deal with global warming and has decided on a national climate strategy, Ban Ki-moon told Xie Zhenhua, vice director of China's National Development and Reform Commission. It can be considered an example for other countries to follow, he said.

According to the report, last year China improved energy efficiency by expanding the use of renewable energy sources, offsetting 835 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. A number of proposals made concerning mitigation, adaptation and technology transfer demonstrate China's support of international efforts to fight climate change, it said.

The UN talks in Poznan aim to negotiate an agreement on climate-change issues including long-term and mid-term emissions reduction targets for developed countries and increased funding to help the world economy transform to a low-carbon model.
