The power plant signed a £10 million (US$17.6 million) contract with Doosan Babcock Energy for direct-injection biomass co-firing systems that will allow its six North Yorkshire plants to mix renewable materials, such as straw, wood and food and agricultural residues, with coal.
The company also said that it would be upgrading its wind turbines, which coupled with increased bio-mass capability, would cut its annual emissions by more than 15% by 2011.
About 7% of Britain’s energy is supplied by Drax, the report said, making it an integral part of the country’s supply infrastructure.
