“Eat less meat,” says UN expert

People should have at least one meat-free day a week if they want to help to tackle global warming, the chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Rajendra Pachauri, told the British newspaper The Observer.

Diet change is critical because of massive greenhouse-gas emissions, habitat destruction associated with rearing animals for food, and other environmental problems, the Indian economist said.

"In terms of immediacy of action and the feasibility of bringing about reductions in a short period of time, it clearly is the most attractive opportunity," said Pachauri, whose panel shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former US vice president Al Gore. Pachauri added that other lifestyle changes also were needed: "We really have to bring about reductions in every sector of the economy."

The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation has estimated that meat production accounts for nearly 20% of global greenhouse-gas emissions.
