Radioactive contamination, as well as arsenic, nitrates, E. coli and other pollutants were found in 6,120 of the 51,000 wells sampled, the report said.
Health authorities are not always required to inform neighbours about pollution, the report noted, or to clean it up.
"This report says that when you drink from a well in New Jersey, do so at your own risk," New Jersey health expert, Bill Wolfe, told Reuters.
