Developing cities use waste water for irrigation

Scores of cities in developing countries use waste water to irrigate crops, leading to serious health and environmental consequences, Reuters reported a study as saying.

The use of poor quality water was most prevalent in cities in Asia, but also occurred in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Latin America. A lack of clean alternative water sources was found to be the main cause.

The International Water Management Institute, which conducted the study, found that many countries did not have official guidelines for
the use or treatment of waste water. The institute suggested following local practices, such as storing water in ponds so solids could settle at the bottom.
