Rather than falling since the 1990s, Britain's greenhouse-gas emissions have in fact grown in line with the economy. Two new reports, which count the emissions from aviation, shipping and imported goods, cast serious doubts on the UK government's claim to have de-coupled growth in emissions from economic growth.

The studies, from the UK-based Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), suggest that the UK’s cuts have only been achieved by ‘exporting’ emissions to countries like China.

At the moment, factors such as shipping and imported goods are excluded under international frameworks for carbon accounting.

According to the BBC, an SEI report, which will be published shortly by campaign group WWF, suggests that the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions are 49% higher than reported emissions.
