Population policy ‘needed to combat climate change’

British couples can contribute to the fight against global warming by only having two children, or at least having one less than they first intended, according to an editorial in the British Medical Journal.

The 79 million annual increase in global population equates to a huge new city for 1.5 million appearing each week, Science Daily reported John Guillebaud, a reproductive health expert, and Pip Hayes, a doctor, as saying.

They point to a calculation by the Optimum Population Trust, that a birth in the United Kingdom will be responsible 160 times more
greenhouse-gas emissions than a birth in Ethiopia.

The UK does not have a defined population policy.
