Mozambique approves large biofuel project

The government of the southern African nation of Mozambique said it approved a large biofuel project to counter the effects of rising fuel prices, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

The government plans to plant sugar cane on 18,000 hectares to produce ethanol, the report said. The project will produce 213 million litres of ethanol a year.

Mozambique is one of many countries hit hard by rising fuel prices. Six people died during riots in the capital, Maputo, earlier this year.
