Activists fail to block construction of US coal plant

The second largest utility in America has won a deal to build a US$1.8 billion power plant in the Appalachian mountains, despite a concerted campaign by environmentalists.

After a two-day hearing, the air pollution control board in the state
of Virginia ruled that Dominion could build the 585-megawatt plant.

The decision will almost certainly increase the practice of
mountaintop mining, the Guardian reported, where mountain peaks are
chopped off in order to extract coal inside. Environmentalists say the
practice produces toxic runoff that is dumped in local communities,
with devastating consequences.
