Britain reveals clean power plan

The British prime minister has unveiled a scheme to invest £100 billion (US$198 billion) in renewable energy, the Guardian reported. The plan could create hundreds of thousands of jobs and install wind turbines across the UK.

Gordon Brown hopes to build up Britain’s clean energy supply in order to reach a European Union target of producing 15% of the country’s
energy from renewable sources by 2020.

In his speech, Brown reportedly said that the North Sea, which has passed its peak in terms of oil and gas supplies, will be turned into
"the equivalent for wind power of what the Gulf of Arabia is for oil".

The new strategy was "visionary", environmental group Greenpeace was quoted as saying. But they warned ministers had promised much before and had so far failed to deliver.

The government admitted last year that on its current trajectory it would reach only 5% of the country’s power from renewable sources by
2020.
