Florida buys sugar firm to restore Everglades

The American state of Florida is making its biggest ever land acquisition in order to restore a large area of the Everlades National Park, the New York Times reported.

US Sugar Corp., the country’s largest sugar producer, has agreed to sell all of its assets and go out of business within the next six
years. Florida governor Charlie Crist described the deal "as monumental as the creation of the nation’s first national park, Yellowstone."

The sugar cane fields will be turned back into marshes and waterways that would help cleanse polluted waters. The natural flow of water
would be restored, the report said.

"It’s spectacular. I don’t think any of us could have fathomed it,"  Kirk Fordham, of conservation group the Everglades Foundation, told
Reuters.
