Study supports US wind power expansion

Wind power can supply 20% of US electricity needs by 2030 at a "modest" cost difference, a US Department of Energy report has found. The analysis predicts that switching to 20% wind energy would cost about 2% more than staying with the current energy mix.

"The 20% wind scenario entails higher initial capital costs (to install wind capacity and associated transmission infrastructure) in many areas, yet offers lower ongoing energy costs than conventional power plants for operations, maintenance, and fuel," the report said.

Under the scenario, 500,000 new jobs would also be created.
