Survey ranks environment fourth among social problems in China

A year-long survey of social concerns among Chinese people found the environment is the fourth most pressing problem after medical care, employment issues and China's growing income gap, state media said on Monday.

The survey of 3,001 residents aged 15 to 69 from 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions was carried out by the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Concern for the environment ranked above worries about corruption, social security, house prices and education costs, the report said.

It also found 81.1% received information about environmental protection from television and radio; 47.3% received their information "from reading", the report said.
