The UN International Maritime Organisation at a major meeting in London this week discussed how countries can at best reduce harmful
ship pollutants and tackle climate changing gases.
"There will be a massive shake up for the refining industry," Reuters quoted Simon Bennett, secretary at the International Chamber of Shipping, as saying.
The world’s 50,000 ocean-going vessels, which carry more than 90% of the world’s traded goods by volume, currently mostly burn fuel oil
rich in sulphur. According to the plan, the report said, the global sulphur limit will be reduced to 3.5% by 2012 from the current 4.5%.
