UN body to tackle ship pollutant limits

The world's top maritime body has tentatively agreed new sulphur limits for ship fuels, Reuters reported an industry source as saying on Thursday.

The UN International Maritime Organisation at a major meeting in London this week discussed how countries can at best reduce harmful
ship pollutants and tackle climate changing gases.

"There will be a massive shake up for the refining industry," Reuters quoted Simon Bennett, secretary at the International Chamber of Shipping, as saying.

The world’s 50,000 ocean-going vessels, which carry more than 90% of the world’s traded goods by volume, currently mostly burn fuel oil
rich in sulphur. According to the plan, the report said, the global sulphur limit will be reduced to 3.5% by 2012 from the current 4.5%.
