Beijing blue sky days ‘bode well for Olympics’

Beijing has recorded its best air quality in nine years, notching up 67 "blue sky days" from January to the end of March, Xinhua said on Tuesday, citing the city's environmental protection bureau.

"Beijing is prepared in terms of air for the Olympic Games," Reuters quoted Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau vice-director Du Shaozhong as saying.

Smog that regularly blankets Beijing is a worry for athletes. In response, China has promised a spate of special measures to guarantee breathable conditions come August.

However, the city’s standard for a "blue sky day" has not been widely recognised by international scientists.
