Global talks on new climate pact open

Delegates from 190 nations are meeting in Bangkok for the UN's first formal talks on replacing of the Kyoto Protocol with a new pact to fight global warming, Reuters reported on Monday.

The summit will build on last year’s meeting in Bali, which started the negotiations on what will replace the Kyoto Protocol in 2012, when its first phase expires. "The world is waiting for a solution that is long-term and economically viable," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon was quoted as saying.

The Kyoto Protocol binds 37 nations to cut emissions of greenhouse gases by an average of 5% from 1990 levels by 2012.
