Chinese NGO sees environmental crisis and opportunities

In a newly published "green book", the Chinese group Friends of Nature reports that 2007 was a year of both crisis and opportunity in China's environmental protection. The report, "Crisis and Turning Point of China's Environment (2008)", was published in Beijing on Thursday.

From a perspective of civil society, the book scrutinises China’s environmental crisis and deals with such issues as energy saving and
emissions reduction, water pollution, climate change and public participation in environmental activities.

The book suggests that the outlook for ecological restoration and environmental protection is not optimistic for a variety of reasons.
They include the great inertia of the traditional model of economic development; irreversible ecological changes; the fact that pollution
discharge in some places already has exceeded environmental carrying capacity, and the negative impacts of global warming.
