The finding of a 2.9% rise in carbon dioxide emissions over 2006 is based on an analysis of data from the US Environmental Protection
Agency, carried out by the Environmental Integrity Project.
Now the largest factor in the US contribution to climate change, the electric power industry’s emissions of carbon dioxide have risen 5.9%
since 2002, the report said, and 11.7% since 1997.
The Environmental Integrity Project recommends that the US retire its oldest and dirtiest coal power plants and replace them with cleaner
sources of energy, such as wind power and other renewable sources.
