Hubei suffers ‘catastrophic’ loss of trees

Exotic trees from south China that had been introduced to the central Chinese province of Hubei were destroyed by the snowstorms and extreme cold this winter, state media reported.

The Hubei Forestry Bureau said 615,300 hectares of forest had been destroyed and 130 million trees were toppled. Areas around the Three
Gorges Dam project were seriously affected, the report added.

The snowstorms were particularly harmful, the report said, since increasing numbers of exotic trees from south China had been introduced to northern parts because of the mild winters in previous
years.
