Winter storms may have killed 8,000 Tibetan gazelles

Unusually heavy snowstorms have killed thousands of Tibetan gazelles in southwest China this year, the International Herald Tribune reported a forestry official as saying on Monday.
The gazelles, which graze in grasslands in Sichuan province, starved after winter storms left them with little food and water.
"We are extremely concerned about the situation of the gazelles. I’m afraid if the temperature in the day continues at this rate, many more will die," the report quoted He Peizheng, director of the Bureau of Forestry in Shiqu county, Sichuan province, as saying.
China Daily reported on Monday that 4,000 Tibetan gazelles had died, but the report quoted He as saying twice that number had perished.
