EU to be warned on climate security

In a stark warning, European Union leaders will be told in a report next week that climate change is a "threat multiplier" that will exacerbate many existing political tensions and heighten global instability.
Potential conflict with Russia over exploitable energy resources at the North Pole looms large as global warning melts the Arctic ice cap and aggravates international security threats, according to the eight-page European Commission report. The study, obtained by Reuters, suggested that the EU should do more to focus international attention on security risks related to climate change.
Prospects for regional conflicts, it said, may increase due to the reduction of arable land, water shortages, dwindling food and fish stocks, increased flooding and prolonged droughts. The east coasts of China and India are among the areas facing severe economic damage from sea-level rise and increasing natural disasters.
