Britons waste $40 billion in food annually

The UK throws away nearly half of all the food it produces, costing the nation an estimated US$40 billion a year, a newspaper report said on Sunday.

Around 20 million tonnes of food are thrown out each year, most of it wasted in British homes, restaurants and hotels, the Independent reported.

Eliminating some of this waste would help preserve the environment and help alleviate a global food shortage, a former government adviser on rural affairs was quoted as saying.
