‘Yellow dust’ from China hits Korea and Japan

South Korea has closed schools and factories, Reuters reported on Monday, as a storm of sand mixed with toxic dust from China covered most of the country and other parts of Asia.

The annual dust storms, which originate in China’s Gobi Desert, are blamed for scores of deaths and billions of dollars in damage every
year in South Korea.

The dust picks up heavy metals and carcinogens as it passes over Chinese industrial regions before hitting North and South Korea and
Japan, the report said, citing meteorologists.

The first major storm of the season was now dissipating, the report added, but forecasts from China say more are on the way.
