UK government accused over plastic bag waste

Nearly one million branded plastic bags were handed out by British government departments last year, the Guardian reported on Friday, despite the prime minister's call for businesses to phase out their use.

Six departments and the publicly funded Electoral Commission together bought 979,106 plastic bags for promotions and marketing, the report said.

In November, the report noted, Gordon Brown used his first speech on the environment as prime minister to call for their elimination,
describing plastic bags as "the most visible symbol of environmental health".
