Chinese factories ‘move inland to avoid scrutiny’

"Green laws" in China are driving polluters inland from coastal regions to escape higher costs and tighter scrutiny, Reuters reported a Chinese think-tank as saying on Wednesday.

Tougher anti-pollution laws and a more vigilant public might force greener investing in China, the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE) was reported as saying, but some of the country’s worst polluters are opting instead to relocate inland.

"It’s quite prevalent, especially in the Pearl River Delta where the government is trying to clear the mess and strengthen the enforcement," Ma Jun, the director of IPE, was quoted as saying.
