London to penalise gas-guzzling cars

Owners of fuel-inefficient cars will have to pay £25 (US$50) a day to drive them in the centre of the British capital, Reuters reported the mayor Ken Livingstone as saying on Tuesday.

The move comes as a part of an initiative to cut the city’s carbon emissions by 60% by 2025.

"I believe that this ground-breaking initiative will have an impact throughout the world with other cities following suit as they step up
their efforts to halt the slide towards catastrophic climate change," Livingstone was reported as saying.

London generates 7% of the UK’s climate-warming carbon emissions, the report said.
