Ministry plans to halt pest invasion

China plans to battle the threat from invasive foreign agricultural pests that has been growing steadily since the period of reform and opening up in the 1980s, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

In the 1970s, Reuters reported the Agriculture Ministry as saying, China discovered just one foreign pest species, but in the first eight years of this century it found almost 20.

These pests include rice water weevils, which attack rice crops, the report said, and codling moths, which are originally from Europe.
