Greenhouse gases at new peak in sign of Asia growth

The industrial rise of Asian economies led by China has pushed atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide to a new peak, Reuters reported a Norwegian scientist as saying on Saturday.

"The levels already in January are higher than last year," Kim Holmen, research director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, was reported as saying at a visit to a research station in Antarctica.

Measurements at a Norwegian station high in the Arctic, Holmen was reported as saying, showed levels of carbon dioxide were now around 394 parts per million, up about 1.5 parts per million from the previous records early in 2008.
