After the outbreak, the lake, which is in east China’s Jiangsu province, hit headlines around the world. A report in the New York Times in October focused on long-time lake campaigner Wu Lihong.
Liu Yaming, director of the Wuxi environmental protection bureau, was quoted by Xinhua as saying the nitrogen concentration in Lake Taihu – which is the primary water source for the city of Wuxi, in Jiangsu province – has decreased substantially.
More than 1 million Wuxi residents suffered water shortages after the incident last year. Though the level of organic contaminants in local tap water has also dropped, local officials concede the clean up process will be a “long process.”
