South China polluter cuts water to 50,000

A luggage manufacturer in Guangdong province last week dumped industrial waste near a water plant supplying drinking water to 50,000 residents, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

The water was severely contaminated and the plant, which is located in Chikan, a town in Kaiping municipality, cut off the drinking water supply to 50,000 people for several days, the report said.

The firm was reported to be directly offloading waste from an electroplating workshop into the river from a hidden duct only 100 metres from the intake pipe of the drinking water plant.
