East China chemical plant approved

Multinational chemical firm DuPont have been given the go-ahead to build a chemical plant in Shandong province that has drawn the ire of environmentalists, the Southern Weekend newspaper reported.

The project in the city of Dongying, which had overwhelming support from local officials, will bring 500 million yuan (US$67.7 million) tax revenue and 600 new jobs for the area, the report said.

But environmentalists say the plant is based on an energy-intensive, highly polluting production method and warn the plant will pump potentially hazardous waste thousands of metres beneath the Yellow River delta.
