Animals and plants need help adapting to climate change

Humans must help animals and plants adapt to a warmer world, Reuters reported environmentalists as saying.

Conservation efforts should focus on protecting a variety of the most resilient communities, the Nature Conservancy were reported as saying.

Traditionally, protection efforts often focused on the best-preserved areas of plant or animal life, the report said, but these are not always the best positioned to adapt.

"Nature is relying on us. In addition to reducing emissions, we need to help natural systems adapt to climate change in order to sustain the processes that make life liveable," Stephanie Meeks, president of the Nature Conservancy, was quoted as saying on the sidelines of UN-led talks on tackling climate change.
