"We are not holding back the project but waiting to assess its environmental impact," Xinhua news agency quoted Wu Xiaoqing, deputy director of China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), as saying on Friday in response to local media reports.
The Rushan project, which is planned for the coastal city of Weihai, has triggered protests in the past from local residents who claim it is sited too near the beach, reports said. The beach is "regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in China" the Xinhua news agency report added.
The report also cited a senior official from the project, Wang Yongxiao, as saying they were soliciting public opinion about the plant among local residents. "The nuclear power plant is not that horrible and the residents must have some understanding of the project," it quoted him as saying.
