One billion trees planted ahead of key climate talks

One billion trees have been planted ahead of next month's international climate change conference in Bali, under a drive backed by the UN and the World Agroforestry Centre.

The goal "is a further sign of the breathtaking momentum witnessed this year on the challenge for this generation – climate change," said Achim Steiner, executive director of the UN Environment Programme.

The Billion Tree Campaign was launched at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi last November.

Half of all those who participated were private citizens or households planting one to three trees, said UNEP, while another 13% were planted by the private sector.
