China rice belt hit by drought

Rice-growing areas of south China have been hit by drought, with autumn rains dropping by 90% in one province and water levels in two major rivers falling to historic lows, Xinhua reported on Tuesday.

In the province of Jiangxi, rainfall since the beginning of October fell by 90% from average figures. Rainfall also fell by 86% in Hunan, the country’s largest rice-growing province, the report said.

Rice is a staple for most Chinese and a crop which needs a constant supply of water

The Gan River and Xiang River, which run through the two provinces, had seen their lowest water levels in history, the report added.
