Europe ‘falls short’ on e-waste recycling

Europe can do far more to recycle electronic waste, a UN study showed on Thursday, with most items -- from mobile phones to freezers -- still ending up on dumps.

"There is a lot of room for improvement even though Europe is often seen as a good example," Reuters quoted Ruediger Kuehr, manager of the study, as saying.

"Consumers are not aware that they are meant to return equipment and have not been informed of the environmental impact of the waste," added Kuehr.

Europe accounts for about a quarter of world electronic waste.
