Iraq dam ‘in danger of deadly collapse’

Iraq's largest dam is in danger of an imminent collapse that could unleash a huge wave of water, possibly killing thousands of people and flooding two of the country's largest cities, reports quoted US officials as saying on Tuesday.

Reports said the collapse of northern Iraq’s Mosul Dam could lead to as many as 500,000 civilian deaths by drowning the city of Mosul under almost 20 metres of water and parts of the capital Baghdad under almost five metres.

"In terms of internal erosion potential of the foundation, Mosul Dam is the most dangerous dam in the world," a US Army Corps of Engineers report was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
