Increased fines for polluters at ancient Chinese site

The government of Lijiang, a World Cultural Heritage site in southwestern China's Yunnan province, has threatened to impose hefty fines on polluters, state media reported on Monday.
Local companies will face a maximum fine of one million yuan (US$146,000) if they fail to meet annual targets on energy consumption and emissions reductions, the report said, citing sources at the local environmental protection bureau.
The bureau will be monitoring heavy polluters, including "cement, cigarettes and metallurgy factories," the report added.
Lijiang is famed for its ancient residential buildings constructed in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
