Kofi Annan launches forum for climate change fight

Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan on Wednesday launched a "Global Humanitarian Forum" to focus on coordinating international efforts to counter the effects of climate change, Reuters reported.

"We need to get the world public to focus on the fact that climate change is not something down the line but is happening now, and that we have to work together to combat it," was reported as telling a news conference.

Former UN humanitarian relief coordinator Jan Egeland of Norway, a board member, was reported as saying five times as many people were dying around the globe from natural disasters linked to climate change than from wars and other conflicts.
