Scientists call for drastic cuts in EU cod fishing

Europe must cut back next year on trawling for cod in the North Sea, and aim to take in less than half their 2006 catch, Reuters reported a group of international scientists as saying on Monday.

Cod is one of Europe’s most threatened species and has long risked a collapse in numbers.

"We recommend constraining catches in 2008 to less than 50% of the2006 catches," Reuters quoted Martin Pastoors, from the Denmark-based International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, as saying.

"This should give these young fish the opportunity to grow and to reproduce and thereby to contribute to the recovery of this important
fish stock."
