Hong Kong battles dangerous smog

Pensioners were hospitalised on Saturday as Hong Kong's air pollution reached a dangerous level despite the week-long closure of factories in the neighbouring Pearl River delta, AFP reported on Monday.

The Air Pollution Index in Hong Kong reached 144 over the weekend, thereport said, crossing the critical 100 mark — the point at which those with respiratory or heart problems are urged to stay home.

The poor air quality was recorded even though many factories in the neighbouring Pearl River Delta in mainland China were closed for a week-long holiday.

More than a dozen Hong Kong pensioners were hospitalised on Saturday alone for breathing ailments, the report said.
