Earth moves into ecological overdraft

The planet reached Ecological Debt day – the day when humanity has consumed all the resources the Earth produced this year – on October 6, environment groups reported on Saturday.

Data from the Global Footprint Network and the New Economics Foundation shows that since the 1980s, humans’ ecological demands have been far larger than what the planet can supply.

In 1996, humanity was using 15% more resources in a year than the planet could supply, with Ecological Debt Day falling in November. Now our overshoot is 30%.

Environmentalists say that one of the most significant consequences of our ecological debt is climate change, but collapsing fisheries, eforestation, and topsoil loss around the world also indicate our over-use of resources.
