Earth’s “vital signs” show stresses of economic growth

The world's fastest rise in greenhouse-gas emissions is occurring in Asia, particularly China and India, said an annual report on the health of the planet published on Thursday by a US think-tank.

The key message of the report is that unsustainable consumption patterns are responsible for climate change, Reuters cited the director of the Worldwatch Institute's "Vital Signs 2007-2008" report as saying.

Another pattern highlighted in the report includes the rapid expansion of soybean plantations in South America, which is led by rising meat consumption and is driving deforestation.
