Shanghai announces first car ban

The Shanghai Municipal Government will hold its first "No Car Day" on September 22. Almost a third of the city's vehicles will be ordered off the roads.
Anyone in the inner city between 7am and 7pm that day will be urged to use public transport or walk, china.org reported, citing a city
government website.
The plan is part of a national campaign to reduce air pollution, which will involve 100 cities holding a "car-free" day on the same day, reports said.
According to official figures, 80% of the pollution in Shanghai’s downtown area is caused by vehicles emissions.
